Abstract

Objective: The present study aimed to compare the efficacy of a Quality of Life Enrichment Package and a Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery (MBCR) intervention on pain self-efficacy in mastectomized women undergoing chemotherapy.

Methods and Materials: Methodologically, this applied study was designed as a randomized clinical trial with a pretest-posttest control-group design and a three-month follow-up. The statistical population consisted of patients referred to the MACSA Charity Institute (Iranian Cancer Control Center) in Mashhad in 1404 who met the inclusion criteria. Forty-five mastectomized women undergoing chemotherapy were selected purposively and randomly assigned to three groups: two experimental groups, consisting of the researcher-made Quality of Life Enrichment Package and the Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery intervention, and one control group. The Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire developed by Nicholas (1989) was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance in SPSS.

Findings: The findings showed that the mean difference in pain self-efficacy scores between the Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery group and the Quality of Life Enrichment Package group was not significant at either the posttest or follow-up stage (p > .05). This indicates that both interventions were effective in increasing pain self-efficacy among patients with cancer, with no statistically significant difference between the two intervention approaches.

Conclusion: Both the Quality of Life Enrichment Package and the Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery intervention may be recommended as psychological components of treatment protocols for improving pain self-efficacy in mastectomized women undergoing chemotherapy in psycho-oncology clinics.
